there are 2 kinds of people in germany: the rude people who don't apologize cuz they are assholes and the perfect people who don't have to apologize cuz they don't do mistakes. so as you can see the word is useless in our country anyway. but if entschuldigung is too hard for you, you can use the word sorry in germany, too

Nice question: for 2 reasons.
1. To be prepared to dangerous situation: this particular digestion allows them to be ready to escape and do the real digestion when they are safe and tranquil
2. To better digest vegetal carbohydrates like cellulose
